There is no greater joy than to raise up a child who is completely dependent on you, looks to you for everything, hangs onto your every word and does their best to mimic your every move. Sounds great doesn’t it!!! There is also no greater responsibility that a parent/guardian can have than the raising, nurturing, the development, and continuous education of a child. Raising a child to be a great man/woman of God, intelligent, powerful and humble is often viewed as a success in parenthood. This world is full of evil, unrighteous and just down right nasty people, images, and distorted views of reality. The importance of giving a child the proper tools guidance, and teaching to conduct themselves within society is often overlooked or under emphasized, mis-guided and allowed to go untouched by far too many parents/guardians in society today.
The Bible clearly states in Proverbs 22:6, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.” So what does that mean exactly? Our job as parents is to try and help our children discern what God wants them to do, and then train them in that way. Whether their calling is in business or law or retailing or service to the church, you want them to be the best they can be, for the glory of God. Whatever we do, our goal is to do it for the glory of God. As an expecting father I cannot wait to take on the challenge to teach my child how to respect, honor obey and most of all love one another as Jesus did. I’ll raise my child to love God, model for them the love of God, and convey to them the love of God by loving them.
Matthew 19:14 says “suffer the little children and forbid them not to come unto me; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” Even at a young age God has ordained that all children belong to him, and will one day be apart of the kingdom of heaven. The need to instill the blessings, promises, grace and mercy of Christ into young children is priceless. You will not always be around to coach and watch their every move. You cannot alter their every decision. You cannot adjust there every thought. You know that your children will remain on the right path because you have taught them to do so. The seed of Christ needs to be fully implanted into their hearts as to allow them to lean on the teachings of God that you have instilled in them.
Four very important things to consider when training a child:
1) Teach them to love God
2) Teach them to love others
3) Teach them how to pray
4) Help them discern Gods will for their lives
All of this starts at home. From the day you bring that little bundle of joy home your focus shifts from husband and wife to baby boy or girl. Sacrifices, compromises, and commitments must all be made in order to give your little one sufficient quality time. You must cover their ears, their eyes, and their lives. Simply put…“Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it.”
