If you’re looking for something original and new in gospel music, you definitely want to check out Terri Cann’s new single “Way of Escape.” With a life that’s rooted in ministry, Ms. Cann tells us how a life lived for God is a life worth living.

So Divine: Congratulations on the release of your new single.

Terri Cann: Thank you, thank you, thank you Darlin’!

So Divine: You’re welcome! I listened to it and its very upbeat, but a different kind of upbeat gospel song. It’s a lot different from the last single that you released, was that done on purpose?

Terri Cann: That was the PR background in me. I thought it would be cool to do something nice and easy, and then all of a sudden just go left. Everyone was like…you?? (laughs) But I like the shock value (Laughs).

So Divine: Where are you now compared to where you were then?

Terri Cann: I wrote that song when I was at a place in my life where a lot was going wrong. It’s a very transparent song. I felt stuck in what I was trying to do ministry wise, like I was going in circles. I was like, God all I want to do is minister to your people. Why is this so hard for me? That’s where I was at that time in my life when I wrote it. That’s how I write most of my songs. Wherever I am you’ll know based on what I’m singing.

So Divine: What does “Way of Escape” mean to you?

Terri Cann: I think everyone goes through that break in life where you really feel stuck, and you ask God where is the way of escape? And you have to come to the realization that He is the way of escape. You know what you should do, keep on fasting, keep on praying, and God will tell you, “I know the future.”  But real talk, sometimes you just don’t wanna do those things (laughs). You’re just tired. I know we must be steadfast, I know what the word says, I know scripture, but I must admit.  But once you’re engulfed in God you’ll realize that He is the escape.

So Divine: You do so much in ministry. You do praise and worship at your church-

Terri Cann: I do everything at my church (Laughs). I play the drums, I am the secretary, I give the announcements, I record the messages, I do a lot!

So Divine: Do you like it? Some people see it as just answering to the call, but do you enjoy it?

Terri Cann: I love my ministry and cannot wait for the day when I can do it full time. I feel fulfilled when I do it. It’s not a task. It’s pure enjoyment for me; ministry through the arts. It’s my natural high.

So Divine: I know that your father is a Pastor, so you grew up as a “preacher’s kid.” Did you find it hard to have fun as a Christian?

Terri Cann: For me, it’s who I surround myself with. All of my friends are saved, and we’re not per say, “holy rollers” (laughs). There are alternative ways to have fun than what your unsaved friends are doing.  I don’t have to go to the club and be down on the floor. At a certain point in your life when you become spiritually mature, you realize you should not go. I thoroughly, thoroughly enjoy my life, without sin. People don’t wanna become saved because they look at is as oh, when I get older and I have nothing else to do with my life I’ll go to church.  Salvation is not as complicated as people think it is. It’s very practical.

So Divine: What would you say to someone who doesn’t know anything about having a relationship with God?

Terri Cann: It’s like when you are in a relationship with someone, as a women in a relationship with a man, and you’re fully in love with him. There’s a connection there. God has been so wonderful in my life. I call him the master orchestrator of my life. I’ve seen how he’s placed people in my life and placed me in certain places to get me where I am today. I’ve seen him heal my father in front of my eyes. I’ve seen his miracles. I can literally feel him. I know he’s real and no one can tell me otherwise.

So Divine: When is the album dropping?

Terri Cann: It’s gonna be out at the ending of January.

So Divine: What musical direction did you go in with album?

Terri Cann: It’s going to be eclectic. It’s gonna be a mixture of pop, neo-soul, jazz, hip-hop, R&B, and I threw in a rock song. So you’re gonna get a little bit of everything.

So Divine: And what does the listener walk away with after hearing it?

Terri Cann: That no matter what, God is always there.  No matter how you feel, even if you can’t say a full length prayer or quote every scripture. There is light in the midst of your darkness.
