In this new age of technology and scientific facts, spiritual warfare (the battle against rulers, authorities and the powerful evil forces of fallen angels headed by Satan) can seem so unreal but the truth is, it’s a reality. Ephesians 6:12 states “we battle not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” To combat this we must be aware of the devils schemes, and we need to stand strong against the enemy who is seeking to destroy our lives. We need supernatural power to withstand the many attacks by Satan. God has provided this by giving us his Holy Spirit within us and his armor surrounding us.
Ephesians 6:13-18 reveals to us the armor of God that the apostle Paul counseled the church to use for strength and power in the Lord. The entire armor of God is every bit as real in spiritual combat as is an actual armor the Roman soldiers used in physical combat. The entire body needs to be armed at all times just as a soldier would arm himself when in combat.
The Whole Armor of God consists of:
1. The Helmet of Salvation
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
3. The Belt of Truth
4. The Shoes of Peace
5. The Shield of Faith
6. The Sword of The Spirit
Helmet of Salvation
Essential for survival for a soldier in battle, the term “helmet” indicates that the helmet is a source of total deliverance. Jesus has to be our source, our guide, our way out. He is our deliverance in every situation spiritual, emotional, and physical. Your mind controls your body, and its actions. the helmet of salvation protects your mind, and makes it harder for the enemy to attack. Pretty important part of the armor if you think about it.
Breastplate of Righteousness
The function of the breastplate was to protect the Roman soldier and was essential for survival. We must continue to realize that Jesus is our righteousness. Our own righteousness, good works and effort is worthless in the spiritual battle again the enemy and is not worthy of God’s protection.
Belt of Truth
Belt was the foundation for all the weapons the Roman soldiers carried. Jesus is the foundation for our spiritual battle. He is the truth that stands against the lies and deception of Satan.
Shoes of Peace
Soldiers wore sandals to provide stability during hand to hand combat. Jesus is our preparation and peace. The footgear gives us the motivation to continue to proclaim the true peace that is available in God. Without the “good news” we of Jesus life, death, and resurrection do not stand a chance.
Shield of Faith
This piece of equipment was one of the most trustworthy pieces the Romans had. However, if he dropped it, or let it down it became useless and his fate rested in his own hands. We trust in Jesus faith as our shield, we cannot rely on our own abilities in this battle. without faith spiritual victory is not possible. Satan wants to make us doubt God and attempt to destroy our faith completely, then we feel defeated. However we know that we have the ultimate victory in the name of Jesus.
Sword of the Spirit
When it was time to strike their opponent the Roman soldier would unleash their sword. The sword represents the word of God. Up until now every piece of equipment was for protection, now are in attack mode and we are on the offense. God word is a powerful weapon against the enemy when used under the spirit power, direction, and anointing. Jesus is the word of God, and the word of God is sharper and more fierce in the spiritual world than any sword could ever be in the physical world.
Since we are no longer on the devils side all believers are subject to “spiritual warfare” and the devils attacks. The whole entire armor of God is every bit as real in spiritual combat as is actual armor used in physical combat. The entire body needs to be armed at all times just as a soldier would arm himself when in combat. May you use the whole armor of God everyday and accept the victory in your spiritual battles through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
